Keep paper receipts: what applies after the law change?

In Sweden, a digital copy of the receipt is usually enough since July 2024. If you have photographed the receipt in Expense and the image is clear, you normally don't need to keep the paper.

📄 What changed in July 2024?

Before, receipts you got on paper also had to be kept on paper. Since July 2024, the Swedish Bookkeeping Act allows the digital copy to be the valid document instead. The physical receipt then normally doesn't need to be kept.

👉 Applies to: everyone who photographs or uploads receipts in Expense.

⚠️ Your company's policy always applies. If your company has decided that originals must be kept or handed to the finance department, follow that.

✅ What the digital copy must be like

Requirement What it means
Readable All details on the receipt can be read.
Complete The whole receipt shows, with date, amount, VAT and supplier.
Unchanged The image is not edited or changed.
Saved in Expense The receipt is registered, so it can be retrieved for an audit.

💡 Check the image before you save. If it is blurry or part of it is missing, take a new photo.

🗂️ When should you still keep the original?

  • ⚠️ The receipt can't be read in the image
  • ⚠️ Part of the receipt is missing in the image
  • ⚠️ Your company requires the originals to be kept
